He comes home for dinner that night and relives unfortunate and difficult memories from his childhood. The main character is the narrator: Obviously, having a boyfriend is not a prevalent theme in conservative Japan.
The sister believes that there is still room for retribution for the narrator. She thinks that the narrator was much more better off because he was the first child, and not the second, which means that there were much less restrictions placed upon him then her.
This dependence on the integrity of the family is now especially seen in the story. The family is quite solemn and only the daughter expresses any sign of vividness or spirit when the son comes home; she is often giggling around her brother. One for Ishiguro completists, and if one wants to start with a short story try A Village After Dark in the New Yorker - but then everyone should read everything Ishiguro has ever written.
